Kathy Griffin Elevates Us to the D List
by Susan Avery
Grandparents.com makes its Hollywood debut
When Kathy Griffin's people called offering us the opportunity to interview the redheaded comedian's mom on air, we jumped at the chance. Maggie Griffin, grandma of two (no, not Kathy's kids), has become quite the star on Kathy's boffo reality show, My Life on the D List, on Bravo. Turn the camera on Grandma Griffin, and she's usually downing another box of wine (an ongoing joke) and letting her daughter's raunchy comments and over-the-top, attention-seeking antics roll off her back. How does she do it?
I sat down with Maggie at Kathy's sprawling Los Angeles split-level that coincidentally overlooks the "Ho" of the famous Hollywood sign. (I don't believe Kathy is a ho, no, no. She's just fabulously skinny, wears body-hugging clothes, lots of makeup, has her hair done up, and talks about sex. A lot.) But when I asked Maggie about her outrageous daughter, she had nothing but pride and praise.
And then Kathy butted in. As she is wont to do, she tried to stir up some trouble, having me ask Maggie how she feels about Oprah, Kathy's major nemesis. Maggie genuinely likes Oprah, as well as Kathy's "gay boyfriends," whom the comedian claims her mother stole from her.
The banter continued for some 45 minutes, most of the time spent with me laughing

myself silly. As a reporter on assignment (jet-lagged from my trip from our New York City offices), it was hard to concentrate on the story at hand. Kathy and her mom made me feel like I was hanging out with fun girlfriends, not like I was conducting an interview. I left there feeling I was their new best friend. (I know I'm not, but I should be.)
Now, here's the fun part. The episode, "For Your (Grammy) Consideration," airs Thursday, July 31 on Bravo (check your local listings for the time). In order to participate on air with the Griffins, I had to sign a waiver saying that Kathy and her team can do whatever they damn well want to do with the segment, including ridicule me.
So, let's tune in together and see what happens. Better to be on Kathy's D List than on no list at all.

| i agree. why would anyone ever want her ideas ,advise or comments on grandparenting. as soon as i see her face on a channel i hit the remote. she is a filthy mouthed lousy example of a grandmother . i cant believe this site actually thought grandmothers anywhere would be interested in what she has to say. maybe the interviewer needs to be more discriminate in who she talks to for our reading pleasure.

| Well I just joined Grandpaerents.com and was surprised to see you talking about Kathy Griffin?? I would have assumed this site was a FAMILY site .
Anything Kathy Griffin has to say probably does not belong here .. I also turn the channel when I see her face on the screne ... Next time please interview someone with a lot more CLASS.
At this point in her career I believe she would talk to anybody ...just to get some exposure.

| I think that this is a great article and hold the utmost respect for Maggie and how she always stands by her daughter with pride and love. We live in a world full of different idiosyncrasies and or lifestyles and they all deserve respect. My Mom always said if you don't have anything good to say don't say anything at all.

| Had recently been seeing some ads on TV for the Grandparents.com site so I decided to join. Spent a couple of relaxing hours today checking out your site. Hmmm, Kathy Griffin on a "supposedly" family friendly site?? I'm 61, been around the block a time or two, but I can think of 1000's of other people more appropriate to interview than someone related to this trashy talking individual.
