The Writer In Me! How to Write Like Nobody Else!
by Phoebe Assenza
Create story plots with this book and activity set for the next great American author
Granddaughters who are unsure whether or not they want to be the next Sylvia Plath (minus the personal drama) or Nora Ephron can try their creative hand at different kinds of writing with this new book and activity kit. The Writer in Me! How to Write Like Nobody Else! features exercises in poetry, short-story writing, playwrighting, screenwriting, and reporting. Each chapter explains the mechanics behind each discipline, and makes all of them sound equally fun. To let your granddaughter perfect her craft, necessary scribing tools are included: a journal, notebooks, and index cards; their cover designs in multicolor, stripe, and polka-dot let her write in style.
It's a near-perfect activity set for tween girls, but the casual, trying-to-teen-speak-tone of the book is sometimes laid on a little thick, and might be a turnoff for more astute readers. Words like "wanna," "gotta," and like, lotsa unnecessary abbreviations are used throughout; they seem counterintuitive for budding wordsmiths. Luckily, the exercises, historical tidbits, and motivational quotes from famous women writers will keep granddaughters turning the page.
