Were you in the delivery room during the birth of one (or all!) of your grandkids? What was it like watching your daughter (or daughter-in-law) give birth to your new grandchild? If you haven't already, check out the "Dueling with the Doula" story linked below and share your stories here.

This coming 1/2/08 my grandson will be 11 yrs old. I was in the delivery with my son, daughter-in-law, her mother and her cousin. It was beautiful. I was a labor and delivery nurse at the same hospital so I've seem hundreds of deliveries. I was not the nurse but the grandma in his delivery. With my second grandson, I was at home taking care of the first.

My daughter gave birth 11/6/07. Her husband, her sister and myself were listed as coaches for the labor and delivery. I must say that from the onset of her contractions and the administering of the epidural up until she started push, I have never been anywhere where there was an air of such calmness. When it was time to push, I was in and out of the room because, honestly, I could not stand to see my daughter work so hard. I literally came back into the room 20 seconds after the baby was born and placed in the isolette I cam back just in time to hear him cry for the first time. Once we were told he was fine, I went right back to my daughter who was still being taken care of by her doctor and let her know how proud of her I was and what a beautiful creation both her and her husband brought into this "crazy" world of ours. In the meantime, her sister, who is 4 months pregnant, couldn't stop crying. I guess all of the emotion caught up with her after the baby's birth so I was comforting both daughters and celebrating the birth of the baby at the same time. It's a wonderful life!!!!

Since you asked I will tell you if was a COMPLETELY BIZARRE experience when my daughter's child was born! For one thing, there was a party in the room! There were at least 7 friends of my daughter, male and female present all during labor.Everyone was laughing and joking. One of the young men blew up latex gloves and made funny faces on them with a pen. Daughter was given an epidural after the first hard contraction so she was in no pain . Every so often the female doctor wold come in and check things and ask us to leave the room for a moment. So we would ALL go out into the hall and stand around. It was so bizarre. No one else had throngs of visitors. Then we would pile back into the room and the party continued. It was like, a episode of 'Friends' but with a few extra people.
Then they asked us all to leave the room and go down the hall. Some of the young people left. But I was there in the waiting room when my grandchild was born and got to see him. Everything was fine for mother and baby . (Thank goodness!)

My daughter gave birth to the most precious thing on 10/14/97. I was there to witness it all, there was a problem with the baby, her foot and her hand, and I will never forget the way I felt and how my heart just started breaking. But within months of her being born, God put his plan into play and her and I have a bond that I never would have thought could be possible. Even though I have 7 grandkids, she is the one that can tug at my heart and the one that will always have a special place in my heart.

I was supposed to be in the room with my daughter when she was going to give birth this past Sunday night, She was scheduled to be induced at 10:00 p.m (Her due date was Dec 2), but the baby's heart rate dropped before they got started and they had to rush her in to do an emergency C section. My heart felt like it dropped out of my chest. I was worried about my daughter and my grandbaby... it took for ever for them to come out and let us know if they where OK. Finally they did come out, and both where doing fine.

My first grandchild was born Feb. 7, 2004. I was in the delivery room with my daughter and son-in-law the whole time---even held my daughters leg while she pushed! Seeing my grandson come into the world, and witnessing my child become a mother, was a beautiful, wonderful experience. One that I will always cherish!
He's almost 4 now, and when I reminded him that I saw him being born--he asked, "But, how did I get IN there????" HA!!!

I was in the delivery room for my 1st and 3rd grandchild and that was the most awesome thing ever. I loved every minute and I was even the first to hold my granddaughter and take her to the nursery and show her off on the way of course.

Yes, I along with my grandsons father, were chosen to be the coaches for my daughters delivery. I was very anxious about it because I was not sure if I would be a help or a hiderance. This was just two short weeks ago. Turns out I was a help for my daughter she being a very private person kept sending her fiance out of the room for all of the "gross" stuff (her words) and she needed me then. It was an amazing experiance to say the least. She was actually there at the birth of her own little sister 13 years ago at a birth center. My grandson was born in the same hospital as his mother was. Hearing his first cry made me tear up but I remember the overwhelming feelings of relief and pride at the same time. Pride for my daughter and the father and relief that he was born healthy. The only thing that would have made it over the top special would have been my husband there with us but she was only allowed two coaches.

no not at the actual delivery. My daughter and the father were the only two in the room other than staff and doctor. Rachel's delivery was so quick for her first delivery and she handled it like a true pro. I stayed up until it was time to push, the doctor was running late and she was fighting the urge to push. I told her if she needed to just to go ahead and push. All in all she was there in the hospital for two hours, if that. I was in the waiting room with everyone else, about 12 people wondering how everything was going when the nurse at the desk ask me to not come back anymore to inquire about her anymore because of the new privacy laws in florida. I have never been so frustrated, confused, and angry. We did speak our peace in the waiting room and spoke to the doctor and head nurse after but it was unbelievable. thank God daughter and baby did very well and i soon had the most beautiful baby girl in my arms and as i looked at my daughter and grand-daughter a joyous tear fell from my eye as i remembered myself lying there holding a baby just as beautiful- her.

I was therewhen my first grandchild was born 3/8/99. My daughter and my son-in-law were so glad I was there. Irubbed my daughters back and held her hand. It was so beautiful to see my grandson coming in to the world. Now my grandson will soon be 9 yrs. old. I would do it again for any of my children if asked.

I was in the delivery room when two of my granddaughters were born
It was the most awesome and scarriest time of my life. One with my daughter and one with my daughter-in-law { also my daughter}. My second grandaughter was 6 weeks early and we didn't think she was going to survive. She is two now and great.

My daugher-in-law blessed me with the privledge of allowing me to be in the delivery room of my second grandchild. It was such a moving and emotional experience for me, I couldn't stop thinking about it and reliving it for months after. I will always admire her for that and it made me love her so much more.

I have not had the privilege of being in the delivery room for any of our four grandchildren.
Was down the hall in the waiting room for the first one because our daughter in-law was too modest to have anyone but her husband with her. I was happy afterwards because I would have been a nervous wreck when they found out the cord was wrapped around the baby's throat twice.

By the time the second one came along, our DIL was not as modest. However, the baby took so long to come into the world we had taken his brother home to bed so he would be rested to meet his sibling the next day.
The third, a granddaughter and sister to the two boys, came into the world a few hours after we'd celebrated the marriage of our second son at home many miles away from our newest grandchild...
Like BSWesley’s grandchild, our third grandson, (born a 20 minute drive from our home), was delivered by C Section, because his heart rate was dropping. We hadn’t even gotten to the hospital at that point. We held him within a couple of hours of his birth.

The closest I have come to the delivery was the first when my son came to take me into the room when our grandson was less than an hour old. Our daughter-in-law who was wiped out by then claims that I was the first one to hold him - I don't think so pretty sure his mother and dad did that before me and told her so.
However I was very close to being there for the birth and did hear the urgent page for the doctor when the cord was discover around his throat, (although I didn't know the reason at that time), so paced and worried with them at a distance.
